The NAGICO Leeward Islands One day Tournament is set to bowl off on July 20th with the first round of matches happening on that date in St. Kitts, St. Maarten and Nevis respectively. Once again, it of course has firm sponsorship from The National General Insurance Company (NAGICO).
NAGICO is committed to the development of cricket in the region and is determined to see its growth from strength to strength. Commenting on this year's Tournament, NAGICO CEO, I. McSood Amjad pointed out that the Tournament had become a household name on the sporting landscape of the region because it provided a valuable outlet for the display of regional youth talent and was also a vital fixture of cricketing action on islands which would not normally see regional competitive cricket.
The EC 100,000 check was handed over to LICA officials at a Press Conference held this morning in the media conference room at Warner Park on the island of St. Kitts. The 6th year of the competition is set to be a charm with keen competition and the best regional youth talent on display.
Eight (8) teams will participate in this year's tournament, with the semi finals and finals slated for St. Maarten. One development this year is that Rounds three (3) to seven (7) have been scheduled to take place on the island of St. Kitts. This is a strategic move which adds a new element to the tournament and also helps to control the regional transportation costs associated with the Tournament. Still, however, due to the fact that it is a regional tournament, some other islands will have a taste of the action with Rounds one (1) and two (2) taking place in St. Kitts, Nevis, St. Maarten, Anguilla, Montserrat, Antigua and The BVI.
The two semi-finals are scheduled for September 5 and 6th in St. Maarten, with the final championship match taking place on September 7th in St. Maarten. Gregory Shillingford, the LICA President expressed that he is once more pleased for the tremendous support and interest from NAGICO that gives young Leeward Island cricketers the opportunity to show off their skills and talent and guide their personal development.
