2008 LICA Three day champions and firmer LICA NAGICO Sponsored One day champion, Antigua humiliated Nevis when the two teams met on Sunday in sixth round action at the Conaree Sporting Complex.
The match got off to a prompt start with Antigua winning the toss and choosing to bat first. Orlando Peters who had played second fiddle to Austin Richards in the previous one day matches this year hammered a quick fire century.
Peters played a fantastic innings which saw the Nevis bowlers being unable to contain the young man’s will power and fluent stroke play. In the end he faced 115 deliveries spanking seven fours and hitting one six. Giving valuable and worthwhile support was Justin Athanaze who ensured that he was able to stay until the end of the innings scoring a well played 50 not out in the process. His fifty was made off of 44 deliveries consisting of three fours and four sixes.
Bowling sensation Larry Joseph got into the humiliating fest when he made a brilliant 44 from just a mere 22 balls with five tremendous sixes.
Trying to contain the Antigua run fest which saw them sparing no one as each bowler received his fair share of assault was Nelson Bolan who from his six overs saw 31 runs being scored with returns of four wickets. Joseph Williams had two for 50 from his ten overs.
When Nevis began their reply it was evident that the run fest that Antigua had hammered upon them had affected the batsmen mentally as they were complacent and were very defensive in their shot selection. The Nevis team was unable to score freely as the Antiguan bowlers in an attempt to emulate the performance of their batting colleagues’ deliveries some very excellent deliveries proving too much for the Nevis team to handle.
In the end the Nevus team was blown away from 134 in just 30.3 overs. Only Tonito Willet and his brother Akito with 25 and 24 respectively offered any real resistance. A late charge by Nelson Bolan who earlier had bowled his heart out to capture the four wickets made an unbeaten 20.
Taking care of the Nevis batsmen were Anthony Martin with excellent returns of two for 12, Justin Athanaze two for 21 and Tarick Prince with two for 39. This meant that Antigua had beaten Nevis by 171 runs to record a 100% winning record so far in the competition with six wins from equal number of matches. Nevis is among three teams who are attempting to take the two final semifinal spots. Montserrat and Anguilla are the other two teams.
